Mobile-Manufactured Home Insurance

Mobile-Manufactured Home Insurance

Mobile homes, also called manufactured homes, have been growing in popularity in recent years, thanks to their affordability and simplified lifestyle. From young people embracing minimalism to families on tight budgets to retirees looking to downsize, more people than ever are turning to these compact dwellings.

Like any other home, your manufactured home is a significant investment, and you'll want to protect that investment over the years. Mobile home insurance is typically not required by law, but your financing provider or mobile home community may require it. Even without any requirements to have it, it is still a good idea to maintain coverage, if only for your own peace of mind.

How Mobile Home Insurance Works

Mobile and manufactured home insurance policies operate similarly to typical homeowners insurance policies and include the same components:

  • Liability Coverage - If someone gets injured while visiting your mobile home, this aspect of your coverage will go towards their medical expenses, if any. It can also apply to any legal costs you face if the person chooses to file a lawsuit against you. If your manufactured home community requires insurance coverage, it will likely be this type. Your lender may require it as well.
  • Property Coverage - This coverage applies to the structure of your mobile home, including the walls, floor, roof, electrical components, plumbing, and more. If your property is damaged in a fire, break-in, or other emergency, this coverage can help pay for the necessary repairs. If you financed your mobile home, your lender will likely require this coverage as they'll expect to get paid even if your home is destroyed.
  • Contents Coverage - This aspect of coverage will typically not be required, but it will give you greater protection for your belongings inside the mobile home, like your furniture, electronic devices, clothing, and more.

In general, manufactured home insurance is more costly than standard home insurance as there is greater risk of damage in fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other extreme weather conditions.
